Key facts
- Google's AI Overviews appeared in 15% of searches a year ago and now appear in 43%, according to Similarweb.
- Publishers are losing referral traffic because AI citations do not always lead to clicks.
- Google is moving from serving as a gateway to the wider web toward becoming a destination where users remain.
- The number of AI responses including a citation rose more than fivefold over the past year, according to Similarweb.
Google updated its generative AI guidance on October 1 to require manual fact-checking before publishing AI-generated content.
The update extends manual review to metadata, covering title elements, meta description elements, structured data and alternate texts for images. Google said using AI to create many pages without adding value may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse. The policy applies to AI-generated content volume. Gary Illyes said AI content “should be human curated.”
Similarweb said AI Overviews appeared in 15% of searches a year ago and now appear in 43%. AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that appear directly on Google’s search results page. The research firm described the feature as an integral part of the search journey rather than just an AI layer placed on top of search results.
Google is moving from serving as a gateway to the wider web toward becoming a destination where users remain. Users now spend more time on Google’s platform instead of treating it only as a way to discover websites.
The average length of Google searches has risen as people replace short keyword queries with longer conversational ones. Publishers are losing referral traffic because AI citations do not always lead to clicks. Last year, Similarweb said the AI citation trend was especially devastating for news publishers.
Similarweb said the number of AI responses including a citation rose more than fivefold over the past year. Travel, retail and sports queries generate cited responses more frequently than queries in other industries. Just 6.8% of U.S. ChatGPT desktop queries included citations as of May 2026.
U.S. desktop referrals more than doubled from 25% in March 2026 to nearly 60% by May 30, 2026, after a May 7 search update. Users take advantage of more prominent blue links within AI-driven search results when available.
Cloudflare introduced tools letting publishers block AI crawlers unless AI companies pay for content access through its marketplace.
Alphabet said AI-powered features send billions of clicks to websites each week. The company also said AI Overviews reached more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode within Google Search passed 1 billion monthly active users.
Similarweb reported that AI Mode visits rose from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. Alphabet said in July that the Gemini app reached 950 million monthly active users.
Gemini powers all 13 Google products with more than 1 billion users, including five products with more than 3 billion users. More than 140 million users interacted with Ask YouTube on the watch page in June 2026 using Gemini-powered conversational features.
Google said it is shifting from helping people find information toward helping them understand and use it. Alphabet reported $119.8 billion in second-quarter 2026 revenue, up 24% from a year earlier. Search and other revenue increased 17% to $63.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026.
Google is overhauling its core product’s interface while keeping the advertising business built around it intact. According to FINCHANNEL’s analysis, providing more information directly in Search makes the traditional role of the search-results page less clear.
AI-generated summaries may appear within AI Overviews citation cards as Google tests or rolls out the feature, a behavior observed in October 2026. Citation cards are the elements that link AI answers to source websites. Brodie Clark said, “it is being summarised based on the information that Google thinks is most relevant to the query.”
The tension at the center of the story is that Similarweb data shows publisher traffic losses as AI answers dominate the search page, while Alphabet says its search features send billions of clicks to websites each week and revenue keeps growing. News publishers are among the site types most exposed, and Similarweb called the AI citation trend especially devastating for them last year.
