Key facts

  • Customers on Free, Team and Enterprise plans cannot use the feature.
  • Connections go through Plaid. Users sign in to their bank on Plaid's screen, so Claude never receives the bank password.
  • Access is read-only. Claude cannot move money, manage accounts, close accounts or make investments.
  • Claude receives up to 24 months of transaction history listing the merchant, amount, posting date, category and the bank's description.

Anthropic began rolling out Personal Finance, a Claude beta, to U.S. subscribers on Pro, Max and Ultra plans on November 5, 2026, letting the chatbot read linked bank balances and transaction history through Plaid. Customers on Free, Team and Enterprise plans cannot use the feature.

Access is arriving gradually on web, desktop, iOS and Android, and users can link up to 16 banks. Connections go through Plaid. Users sign in to their bank on Plaid’s screen, so Claude never receives the bank password. Access is read-only: Claude cannot move money, manage accounts, close accounts or make investments.

Claude sees the bank name, account name and type, last four digits, balances and credit limits for each linked account. It receives up to 24 months of transaction history listing the merchant, amount, posting date, category and the bank’s description. Loan, credit and investment accounts show balances and limits only, while holdings, trades, interest rates and loan terms stay hidden. The tool is not designed to give investment advice.

Some banks put a full account number in an account label or purchase description, and Claude can read it there. Anthropic warns Claude may produce incorrect figures, and displayed balances can lag real balances by one or two days.

Financial figures persist in conversation history until the chat is deleted, and shared chat links display them too. Unlinking a bank cuts off future reads but leaves earlier answers, artifacts and shared links in place. A spending dashboard or other artifact shows its numbers to anyone who views it and survives after the source chat is deleted. Deleting earlier answers, artifacts and shared links is the user’s responsibility.

Regular chats that consult linked accounts follow each user’s existing privacy settings and do not ask permission for every read unless a setting changes. Web and desktop users can turn Plaid off for chats through the Connectors menu. Mobile users can set Claude to ask before each read.

Claude asks before publishing an artifact from a conversation that drew on linked accounts. Claude excludes account-data chats from its memory, search and the monthly recap. In those chats Claude cannot run code or handle Office and PDF files, but text, tables and CSVs still work.

When a paid subscription ends, the hub closes while linked banks remain connected until disconnected. Access can be revoked at my.plaid.com. Once processed, deleting a Claude account unlinks banks automatically, and switching the account to Team or Enterprise does the same.

Anthropic called the beta an opening move and invited financial companies to build tools for larger money decisions alongside regulated institutions and licensed advisers, setting no timeline for that effort. Anthropic excludes Personal Finance hub conversations from model training. OpenAI released comparable ChatGPT personal finance tools on May 15, 2026, in a preview available only to US Pro subscribers.

ChatGPT’s Finances feature became available in May 2026 for US Pro subscribers on Plaid, covering more than 12,000 institutions such as Schwab, Fidelity and Robinhood.

Anthropic filed an amended S-1 on November 2, 2026 to list on Nasdaq under ticker ANT but remains private, as does Plaid. Plaid says more than 800 AI companies build with Plaid and that Plaid earns money from those connections. Plaid said nearly two-thirds of US users connecting accounts to AI assistants via its service had never tried a Plaid-powered personal finance app before. Will Robinson, Plaid’s chief technology officer, wrote in a company blog post, “most people don’t need more financial information.”

I-Scoop reported that under PSD2, access to payment accounts is a consumer right in the EU. Plaid B.V. holds a license supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank under license R179714. Article 67 of PSD2 limits providers to explicit consent and designated accounts and transactions, and bars using the data beyond the requested service. Strong customer authentication rules require re-authentication with each bank at least every 180 days under a standard applying since July 25, 2023.

Anthropic’s privacy policy dated Sept. 10, 2026 names Anthropic Ireland Limited as controller for EEA, Switzerland and UK users, and the policy relies on standard contractual clauses for transfers to the US. The AI Act classifies creditworthiness evaluation as high-risk from Dec. 2, 2027, while summarizing a user’s own spending sits in the transparency tier. From Nov. 20, 2026 the Consumer Credit Directive gives consumers a right to human intervention, explanation and review of automated creditworthiness assessments.

The Commission proposed FIDA in June 2023 and the Council adopted its negotiating mandate on Dec. 4, 2024. Projective Group says FIDA trilogues stalled in June 2025, and the Commission issued a non-paper on April 6, 2026, to restart talks with a narrower scope. PSD3 and the Payment Services Regulation reached political agreement on Nov. 27, 2025, and final texts appeared on April 23, 2026.

Open Banking Tracker expects most PSD3 and Payment Services Regulation rules to apply around 2028. Bank statements contain data about silent parties who never consented, and a European product must limit and describe what happens with those names.

In August 2025, Grasshopper Bank in New York let business clients connect account data to Claude through the Model Context Protocol, a standard for linking AI models to external systems. Narmi, the technology partner, built the feed using the bank’s current authentication, explicit consent from each customer, read-only permissions plus an application firewall.

Only US banks work with the feature, and people beyond the United States do not see it, even when someone connects through a VPN from abroad. Anthropic has not given a date for availability in other countries.
