Reddit announced on Oct. 29, 2026, that it will restrict most of its content to users with accounts, shifting the site to a primarily logged-in service. The announcement marks one of the most significant shifts in the platform’s 21-year history. Reddit long championed the open web but is now building a more direct relationship with users while protecting data from AI-era scraping.

Steve Huffman said the change aims to enhance personalization, improve ad targeting, combat unauthorized content scraping and adapt to global regulations. He called open browsing unsustainable after 20 years as the site has grown. Huffman said, “Our goal is to help you find what’s most relevant to you and drive the community, connection and belonging that makes Reddit, reddit”.

The front page will remain open to visitors without accounts, and people arriving from search results or external links can view the page they target. Logged-out users will likely not be able to visit specific subreddits or browse beyond the homepage, search results and shared links, and what they can see may differ between desktop and mobile.

Accounts will not require real names or identity documents, and Reddit is re-releasing a read-only incognito mode, a private browsing setting that does not store history, in its mobile app. Rebuilding the feature will require the app. Creating an account usually requires an e-mail address, and logged-in activity can be used for personalization and ads. Reddit does not know users’ real-world identities, and ads are targeted based on activity in communities rather than personal identity, Huffman said.

Search referral traffic fell significantly in the third quarter of 2026. In October 2026, it averaged more than 1 million fewer referrals per week than in prior periods, and the decline continued into early Q4. Huffman blamed Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, which he said are expanding aggressively, and lower rankings for machine-translation content that mainly affect Reddit outside the United States.

Before AI-powered search, Google leaned heavily on Reddit in a mutually beneficial relationship, with AI Overviews driving traffic to the site. Huffman said web search is evolving from a gateway to the web into an AI-powered destination, and that AI search cannot meet the need for community, connection and belonging or provide context and nuance. Search referral trends do not determine Reddit’s relevancy or define its future, he said.

Reddit reported a 53% increase in revenue to $895 million in the third quarter of 2026, and the results beat estimates. Shares closed the regular session at $129.60 and fell about 17.8 percent in after-hours trading to roughly $106.50, dropping below their 52-week low as the weaker growth outlook drove the decline.

More than 80 per cent of Reddit’s monetisation comes from daily active users who use the app or are logged in, Huffman said. The company has seen growth in logged-in and app users compared with the previous quarter. Huffman said, “Logged in and app dial are our most valuable users, and they are our primary focus.”

Huffman said, “the vast majority of unauthorized access to Reddit (basically the scraping and stealing of Reddit’s data) happens through our logged-out experiences.” Reddit intends to keep licensing its data under commercial agreements to AI platforms and search engines that require access. User data is the primary fuel for training large language models, AI systems built on enormous text collections, and Reddit wants only paying partners to access its conversation data. After its IPO, Reddit faces pressure to maximize revenue, with significant income from Google and OpenAI licensing deals paying hundreds of millions for real-time data.

The change follows a series of restrictions. Reddit announced in June 2026 that old.reddit.com would require a mandatory login, and earlier in 2026 the company limited Old Reddit to users with accounts older than six months. The moves follow controversial API pricing changes in 2023 that prompted community blackouts and the deletion of user accounts, and Reddit has also increased prompts for users to download its mobile app and rolled out a new personalized For You homepage. After the failed blackouts and protests in 2023, Reddit leadership believes users have no viable alternative with the same scale and depth.

old.reddit.com is minimalist, text-heavy and fast, free of bloated graphics and algorithmic feeds. Its simple HTML makes it easy for bots to parse and store, and Reddit management said the legacy site had become a backdoor for automated systems harvesting data without contributing back. Requiring login ends anonymous reading there and lets Reddit track browsing habits precisely.

A prominent technology market analyst said, “Reddit is no longer a community that belongs to its users; it is an asset that belongs to its shareholders.” Privacy advocates worry the change will deter readers seeking sensitive health, legal or mental health information who do not want a digital trail. Logging in will also let Reddit collect more data from upvotes to help users discover relevant content, communities and discussions.

The strategy restricts anonymous access to historical archives, increases data valuation, enhances profiling for hyper-targeted ads and nudges users toward official mobile apps. Search engines may eventually face hurdles indexing these pages, leading to a less informed user base. Locking down the site will affect usage in private browsing modes.

Reddit has a large following in India, where users discover the site through searches for advice on phones, careers, money, travel or local issues. If the trial reaches India, users may be unable to browse beyond one post after searching without logging in. Signing up is free and terms may vary by region.

Reddit has not confirmed reported dates for ending public API and RSS access. The company pointed developers, researchers and creators using those tools to developer announcements for updates.

The pilot will begin in select markets outside the United States in the fourth quarter of 2026, and results will inform an optimized logged-in-only version globally. Reddit warned that total daily active users could decline by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter of 2026 from a current base of 130 million. The company has not decided which content will be restricted, which countries will be affected first, or the rollout timeline.
